Peggy and Todd Hommel, with the help of the Tuckahoe Youth Association (TYA) and Tuckahoe After School Care (TASC), reached out to help Tuckahoe residents Mary and Frank Moran’s family in Belle Harbor in the Rockaways.
The Morans had to house, feed and transport 26 family members, three dogs and a bird, and the TYA and TASC went to work, delivering supplies and labor.
On Saturday, 12 SUVs were loaded and made ready for a Sunday morning delivery.
“Upon arriving at the devastated area, people’s first reaction was that of disbelief,” Peggy Hommel said. “The images you see on television do not paint a true picture of what the areas are like. There are people’s lives on the sidewalk, next to 12-foot high mounds of contaminated sand on every block.”
Volunteers assisted families with vehicles too damaged to start, pushing them off properties, and several feet and tons of sand were moved from the lower levels of the houses most damaged by the storm.
Mary Moran expressed her gratitude for those gracious enough to help her family in its time of need.
“The support we received at the various family homes has made a huge difference in our lives. The kind words of concern and supplies have made us realize we aren’t alone,” she said. “Tuckahoe, Bronxville and Eastchester residents have exhibited a true sense of love and community support. We are lucky to be living in such a wonderful place.”
