Katz, who is running for a third term against Democratic challenger Andrew Falk to represent the 94th Assembly District, harshly criticized the gun control legislation in a video interview with Daily Voice.

The New York Safe Act was signed into law in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in 2012.

"It was done in the most disgraceful, cheap political hack means," Katz said. "All it does is put more restrictions on legal gun owners who have gone through incredible regulatory hoops and education on gun safety as a requirement to get your license."

Passing the Safe Act was a misguided move by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Katz said.

The 94th District represents Yorktown, Somers and Putnam County.
