Eastchester Prepares For Potentially Historic Winter Weather

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – With Winter Storm Juno fast approaching Eastchester, town and village officials are gearing up for the first battle against Mother Nature.

According to the National Weather Service, “blizzard like conditions” will begin in Westchester County on Monday afternoon, Jan. 26, continuing through Tuesday night, Jan. 27. As many as 16 inches of snow may fall overnight, with an additional seven to 11 inches expected on Tuesday.

In advance of the storm, Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale has warned residents no overnight street parking will be allowed on Monday night, and all vehicles must be removed from roadways, including LK1 permit holders, so DPW crews can clear the streets.

Overnight parking will be permitted in the Garden Avenue parking lot in the rows closest to Garden Avenue. Street parking will be permitted again at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, when the parking lot exemption ends.

Any cars left in the street overnight will be towed.

“We are urging residents to leave their cars off the roadways to assist us in snow removal efforts,” Satriale said. “Please utilize your driveway if at all possible. If you normally drive to the train station, please consider getting a ride so we may clean the municipal lots more effectively.”

In Eastchester, garbage collection and recycling will be suspended on Tuesday. Town Hall administrative offices are set to close early on Monday and will stay closed until Wednesday at the earliest. All court dates have been suspended. Tuckahoe village offices also will be closed.

“Residents, business owners, property owners and renters should not shovel snow into the street so that fire, police and ambulance crews can safely access emergency routes,” Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond said. “The best advice for driving in bad weather is to not drive at all, and to not go out until the DPW has had a chance to do its work.” 

The Bronxville Police and American Red Cross have offered residents a list of safety tips to help survive the storm as comfortably as possible. Eastchester officials have also released a series of tips for safety in cold weather.

“Use extreme caution over the next few days, as this is predicted to be a dangerous storm,” Satriale said. “Emergency operations and assistance will be provided during the entire event as we prepare for the storm. “
