TARRYTOWN, N.Y. The Children Understanding Cultural Differences (CUCD) seventh grade boys basketball team from Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville travelled to Tarrytown Friday and earned a 54-50 victory over the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow boys team.
We knew that we were ready to execute and beat a good Tarrytown team that had only lost three games, CUCD Coach Donald Gunther said. This was a total team effort because as the coach I saw our boys had let up some because of our lead at halftime. After letting them back in the game, the boys made better basketball plays, played aggressive defensive and took high percentage shots.
CUCD raised its season record to 9-2, handing the Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow team its fourth loss. CUCD defeated Tarrytown 58-41 in an earlier game this season.
Jason Douglas 19 points, Jamon Murray, with 14 and Isaiah Gunther with 12 points led the way for the winners. Douglas and Murray scored all CUCDs points in the first quarter and Gunther was 6 of 6 from the field in the first half as CUCD opened a 35-17 lead.
Up by as many as 20 points in the first half, CUCD allowed Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow to tighten the game in the third quarter with a 22-8 run that cut the lead to 46-39. But the locals got support from Alex Williams, Christian Pinto and Zachary Tucker in the fourth quarter with Murray and Williams each hitting a big 3-point goal late in the game to secure the win.
