Eastchester Considering Joining Sustainable Westchester Movement

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - Town officials in Eastchester are asking for input from the community as they mull the merits of participating in Sustainable Westchester, which would force homeowners to change gas and electric providers.

Many county municipalities have already joined the Sustainable Westchester movement. Eastchester and Bronxville may be next.

On Tuesday, the town issued a survey on its website, polling local residents to gauge interest in Sustainable Westchester, a program that allows for the combined purchasing of power in searching for natural gas and electricity suppliers.

“Con-Ed would still be the utility company, but the supplier would be put out to bid. If the town decides to participate, it would involve every household,” officials said, noting that those not interesting in participating in the program will have to go through an opt-out process.

In total, it is estimated that by participating in Sustainable Westchester, it could result in energy savings of up to 5 percent.

According to the Sustainable Westchester Mission Statement, it is a consortium of Westchester County local governments that facilitates effective sustainability initiatives. Sustainable Westchester “is the expression of your local governments’ determination to turn our environmental challenges into opportunities to improve the quality of life, economy and future prospects of the citizens of the county. It brings grass roots and municipal forces together to achieve concrete change.
