Jerry Napolitano, a member of the Eastchester Board of Fire Commissioner sent an alert to residents, warning them of the dangers and perils of lighting off fireworks, and advising that those interested in fireworks seek a professional show.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, thousands of people are injured while using consumer fireworks each year to celebrate the Fourth of July. Napolitano added that the risk of a fireworks injury is two-and-a-half times greater for children younger than 14.
Three years ago, the Consumer Product Safety Commission initiated a study of fireworks injuries between June 17 and July 17. The organization determined that an average of 200 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around Independence Day, while and there were four reported deaths.
Although they are seemingly one of the least intimidating form of firework, sparklers – which are commonly used by children – account for 17 percent of injuries, more than double that of Roman candles and bottle rockets. Firecrackers and reloadable shells each account for 14 percent of all fireworks-related incident.
