SCARSDALE, N.Y. – The Scarsdale Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SVAC) is offering local residents the opportunity to learn several life- saving techniques with a series of classes beginning in January.

During the classes, participants will learn to administer CPR, how to use an automated external defibrillator  and ways to rescue adults, children and infants who are choking. Rescue breathing will be taught, but “mouth to mouth” resuscitation will not have to be performed.

The five links in the adult Chain of Survival will also be covered during the classes.

The Chain of Survival includes immediate recognition of cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system, followed by early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions and rapid defibrillation with the use of an AED. That is then followed with advanced life support and integrated post-cardiac arrest care.

The SVAC course is designed for anyone with limited or no medical training. Anyone that completes the course will receive an American Heart Association CPR certification that will be valid for two years. There is no official minimum age, but it is recommended no one less than 12 years old participate.

Each class will cost $45 per participant, and registration can be completed online . Private group training is available for interested parties. SVAC provides CPR classes for families, civic groups and businesses. To schedule a private course, e-mail
