Eastchester Police to Check for Seat Belt Use

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - Motorists traveling through Eastchester not wearing their seat belt may find themselves targeted by local law enforcement for the next two weeks, as police are once again participating in the Buckle Up New York “Click it or Ticket” campaign.

Through a state grant, police will have extra patrols looking specifically for seat-belt and child-restraint violations. The extra patrols will continue operating through June 3.

“It’s good for the community,” Eastchester Police Lt. Robert Jensen said. “It gives us extra funds so we can put additional patrol officers out there just for this detail. It’s going out for selective traffic enforcement for seat-belt safety awareness. We wouldn’t have the manpower to do such an effort without he grant.”

Eastchester has been participating in the program for more than a decade, and Jensen said that compliance has progressively gotten better over the years.

According to the state Department of Motor Vehicles website, those in the front seat – both driver and passenger – are required to wear a seat belt. Any passenger under the age of 16 must wear a seat belt or an appropriate child-safety restraint system, even in the backseat.

“This has been a very good safety tool,” he said. “Hopefully through selective enforcement, people will learn to put on their seat belts and use proper child restraints.”
