Eastchester Schools Shine on State Tests

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Students in the Eastchester Union Free School District are exceeding county levels of proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and math according to state test scores released Tuesday.

Nearly 85 percent of the students tested in grades three through eight achieved scores that indicated they were proficient or higher in both areas of study.

Depending on the grade, anywhere from 210 to 240 students took the exams.

Eastchester Schools Superintendent Dr. Marilyn Terranova was out of the office and unavailable for comment on the test scores.

Countywide, 62.9 percent third through eighth graders met or exceeded proficiency standards for Engligh Language Arts, and 70.1 percent met or exceeded proficiency standards for math.

Last year, the state raised its "proficiency" standard scores to "better reflect the level of achievement needed to indicate that a student is on track to achieve college-ready scores on future state exams," state education department officials said in a press release.

"While the majority of students statewide met or exceeded the state's proficiency standards in both math and English Language Arts, overall performance remains low and the gaps in achievement persist," the release said.
