Eastchester, Tuckahoe Police Focus on Terrorism

Eastchester and Tuckahoe Police spent the holiday weekend participating in statewide anti-terrorism campaign.

Beginning Friday night. patrols in the town and the village were stepped up at railroad stations, bus stops and municpal buildings, among other locations.

"We paid particular attention to the United Water facility and Con Edison" said Lieutenant Robert Jensen of Eastchester.

The intiative is called Safeguard New York and is designed to spot possible terrorist actions in small towns or villages that may be vulnerable.

According to Lieutenant Margaret Belles, of the Tuckahoe Police Department, patrols always check on areas of concern in the village like the train stations, but during the holiday weekend, officers take the time to stop their cars and speak to anyone near those locations.

"We give them a brochure that reminds them that if they see something say something," Belles said.

The initiative is supported by the New York State Office of Homeland Security. The brochure reminds residents that there are signs of terrorism people should be aware of. Some signs people may notice are someone taking pictures or making drawings of an area, a person asking for information about operations, security or staffing orsomeone in the area that seems suspicious or out of place.

Another significant thing police hope will be reported is an unattended package or bag.

"We will investigate anything that seems out of place," said Bell

Sergeant Kevin Tiedeman, who ran the initiative in Eastchester, said that most people are a little less worried these days about homeland security. "Still everyone was very cooperative when we reminded them of the program, he said.
