Ecap Donating Backpacks To Eastchester Families In Need

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – In an effort to help local families that may be economically challenged, several Eastchester good Samaritans have been busy collecting backpacks and school supplies that will be distributed this week.

The Eastchester Rotary Club has donated nearly 150 backpacks, stuffed to the brim with standard “back to school items” such as pencils, rulers or notebooks, which will be distributed by the WestCOP Eastchester Community Action Partnership (ECAP) on Thursday, Aug. 28.

ECAP, an organization that has been helping Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville families since 1965, has more than two-dozen programs that are designed to address any social need that the community may face.

Marie Simpson, a Tuckahoe mother of two, said that she wasn’t sure how many local families are financially strapped and cannot afford supplies, but noted that the packages could be useful to families in neighboring municipalities.

“In (Eastchester), I think a lot of us are extremely fortunate and blessed. I’m sure there’s some in our community that will benefit from the supplies, but hopefully once our families are taken care of, we can go to some of the larger school districts that have students in need,” she said. “I’m sure that they’ll all go to good use one way or another.”

The backpacks will be distributed at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Eastchester Community Action Partnership at 144 Main St. in Tuckahoe.
