James Pileggi, 34, was convicted of manslaughter after shooting and killing his friend, New Rochelle native Andre Everett. Pileggi, who was off-duty at the time, said he thought the gun was empty and he was taking it apart to show Everett a laser sighting device.
Pileggi faces a maximum of six more years in prison. He resigned as a police officer six days after the shooting.
Pileggi is not eligible for parole again until 2016. In a statement, Everett’s family praised the decision to keep his killer behind bars.
“We are pleased with the decision of the New York parole board to deny early release to James Pileggi,” they said.
“We feel the circumstances of his horrific crime in the killing of Andre, along with his uncharged crimes as a member of the Eastchester Police Department related to drug possession and drug sales do not make him an appropriate candidate to be released at this time. As our family continues to deal with the harsh and painful reality that we will never see Andre again, we do appreciate the limited comfort provided in knowing that his parole request was denied.”
