Nicholas DePippo, 23, a varsity football player at Eastchester, died early on Sunday morning while attempting to climb onto a terrace railing near the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. While climbing, DePippo fell several feet to his death onto a concrete jogging path at approximately 6 a.m.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10 at the Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home in Eastchester. There will be a mass and burial beginning the following day at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale.
DePippo, who worked as a lifeguard at Lake Isle before becoming a full-time student at the University of Massachusetts and Widener, played wideout and defensive back for the Eastchester football team during his time at the high school.
Eastchester Superintendent of Schools Walter Moran, who served as the middle school principal while DePippo attended, said that "the entire Eastchester School District family is very saddened by the death. His family is in our thoughts and prayers during this painful time."
"Nick was a great kid and everyone loved him." read a tweet posted on Eastchester's varsity football Twitter account @EastchesterFB, which also posted a photo of DePippo from his varsity playing days at EHS.
In a message on his guest book at the Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Home, State College, Pennsylvania residents Kathy and Dave Derr remembered DePippo and sent a message of remorse to his friends and family.
“Our hearts are breaking for you. Although (we) know the grief of losing a child, (we) also know that your level of loss is a lifetime greater because of the memories you shared with Nick. As (we) reviewed his Facebook page, (we were) struck by the love that binds your family. You truly enjoyed spending time with each other, which is evident by the smiles and hugs in every family picture. Hold on to those memories, they will bring you solace in the times ahead. Please know and feel our love and prayers for you. (We) pray God's grace and mercy surround you and strengthen you during this heartbreaking time. We love you.”
