EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Sanitation collection will be suspended on Friday, Oct. 11 in Eastchester as the town mourns Nicholas Farella, the public works employee that died from injuries sustained in an accident on Monday, Oct. 7.

Farella, 42, a Scarsdale resident, was working on the back of a sanitation truck on Water Street on Monday afternoon when the vehicle backed up, struck a utility pole and crushed him.

Farella was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where he died at night during surgery. A second DPW employee was also on the truck at the time of the accident, but he sustained no injuries from the crash.

Members of the community reminisced about the longtime town employee.

“It’s just a tragedy. It’s truly a loss for the entire community and it comes as such a shock,” Pete Smith said outside of Town Hall. “He was a nice young man. Your heart just goes out to his family.”

The Farella family has been a fixture in Eastchester for several years. Nicholas is survived by his wife, daughter and parents. His uncle, Eastchester Town Justice Dominick Porco, couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

“You hate to see something like this happen, especially to someone who has been an important part of the community for some time,” Tony Scott said on Tuesday. “It’s really tough to swallow.”

Sanitation college will resume normally on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Visiting hours for Farella are scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale. He will be buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
