Hurricane Sandy Brings Westchester Wind, Flood Warnings

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. – Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring life-threatening storm surge flooding to coastal areas, according to the National Weather Service.

As of Monday morning, Sandy was centered more than 200 miles off the North Carolina coast. The storm was moving north, and its northwest turn would have Sandy making landfall Monday evening, forecasters predict.

The storm is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain by Tuesday afternoon. A flood watch is in effect for all of Westchester and a coastal flood warning remains in effect until Tuesday at 3 p.m. for the Long Island Sound shore and Hudson River coastal areas. A high wind warning remains in effect for the county until Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Rain will continue through the day Monday, and could be heavy at times, according to the forecast. High temperatures will be near 61 degrees. It will be windy, with winds increasing to between 33 to 47 miles per hour in the afternoon with gust as high as 60 miles per hour in coastal areas.

Rain could be heavy at times Monday night with an overnight low of around 53 degrees. It will remain windy, with winds of 29 to 40 miles per hour with gusts as high as 80 miles per hour.

Rain will continue Tuesday with winds up to 28 miles per hour and gusts as high as 45 miles per hour, according to the forecast. The high temperature should be around 60 degrees. Showers are likely to continue through Tuesday night with an overnight low of around 48 degrees.

Rains will lighten off Wednesday morning with scattered showers possible through the day.
