EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester Board of Fire Commissioners has announced that Tuesday is the last call for any resident looking to join their ranks.

According to Eastchester Fire Commissioner Jerry Napolitano, the board is looking for interested parties who want some say in determining how the fire district allocates its $17.3 million budget, which has already been approved for 2015.

The five-person Board of Fire Commissioners is responsible for general administration in the three local fire departments, appointing personnel and preparing the annual fire district budget.

Petitions, which can be downloaded online, require that candidates obtain at least 25 signatures from members of the district who believe that the candidate would make for a good fire commissioner. The new fire commissioner will serve a five-year term that begins on Jan. 1, 2015, and ends on Dec. 31, 2019.

Napolitano also urged residents to come out and vote in the fire district election from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 9.

In Eastchester, votes can be cast at Town Hall, LeRoy Gregory Post 979 on Bell Road behind Equinox Gym, and at the Union Corners Fire Station on Oregon Avenue. Tuckahoe voters should head to the Community Center, while Bronxville will hold its election at Village Hall.

“The Fire District election is routinely overlooked by residents, as less than 4 percent of the eligible voters turnout to vote,” he said. “The approved 2015 budget for the fire department directly impacts your tax assessment.”

“This election should be taken just as serious as any town election or school board election, for these board members manage and administrate a budget that is larger than the individual (village) budgets of Bronxville or Tuckahoe.”
