"The amount of backlog has grown tremendously,'' said Shimsky, a Democrat from Hastings-on-Hudson, during a conference call with reporters. "The question is, 'Is this work going to get done?"
Projects are detailed in County Executive Rob Astorino’s Proposed 2015 Capital Project Budget, which Shimsky reviews as chair of the county Board of Legislators Infrastructure Committee.
More troubling, she said, is the fact that the 2015 Capital Project Budget’s Five-Year Capital Program section offers practically no information about how much money the county will be spending on crucial repairs to its parkways, roads and bridges in the upcoming years.
A spokesman for Astorino was not immediately available for comment.
“Westchester County’s Capital Budget is in shambles, and soon the county’s aging infrastructure could be, too,” Shimsky said. “The lack of repairs and regular maintenance being done on our crumbling roads and bridges, corroding sewage pipes and antiquated water systems pose potential health and safety risks to our county residents and business owners.”
Shimsky cited separate road projects in Eastchester -- Wilmot Road, Mill Road and Harney Road -- for which more than $1 million has been appropriated, but little work done. A list of county capital projects can be found here:
Shimsky suggested the Astorino administration meet with county legislators to discuss how to prioritize all of the capital projects on the books in an effort to keep the county’s crumbling infrastructure from getting worse.
