Longtime CBS '60 Minutes' Newsman Morley Safer Dies At 84

Just days after a one-hour tribute aired Sunday marking the end of a 61-year broadcast career, CBS announced 60 Minutes" anchor Morley Safer died Wednesday at age 84.

A native of Canada, Safer, who died at his home in Manhattan, also had a home in Chester, Conn.

Safer was in declining health when he announced his retirement last week, CBS News said.

Safer appeared on "60 Minutes," CBS News' highly rated show for 46 years, the longest run anyone ever had on prime-time network TV, according to CBS.

CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves called Safer "one of the most important journalists in any medium, ever."
