The investigation officially ruled the cause of death as "anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest," or brain damage due to lack of oxygen, CNN reported.
Dr. Lawrence Cohen was performing an endoscopy to ascertain why Rivers was suffering from a sore throat and a hoarse voice. During the procedure, Rivers' vocal chords began to swell, which cut off oxygen to her lungs, which ultimately led to cardiac arrest, CNN said.
