Spinelli has joined the Westchester County Department of Public Safety at the rank of sergeant, spokesman Kieran O'Leary told Daily Voice. O'Leary added that Spinelli was sworn in to his county post on Monday.
Prior to becoming chief, Spinelli served as a village police sergeant and was president of the local Police Benevolent Association (PBA). He also supported the village's police consolidation with the county.
Westchester County police took over the bulk of local law enforcement duties on June 1 as part of a contract with Mount Kisco. The contract, which runs through the end of the decade, calls for the village to make annual payments to the county for the services in exchange for a dedicated policing staff count. The village police department still exists, although its purview is limited to services such as parking enforcement and court security, Mayor Michael Cindrich previously said.
Most of the village's police personnel resigned their positions and joined the county police. The only two uniformed staff remaining with the village when the deal commenced were Spinelli and Lt. Louis Terlizzi.
Terlizzi, a vocal critic of the consolidation proposal, resigned earlier this month. As a result of both resignations, the village's police force has no uniformed personnel.
Cindrich, who also confirmed that Spinelli resigned, said he did not expect him to leave so soon. The mayor added that the village intends to hire new staff for the police department and that interviews are scheduled for next week.
While a number for the village police department's new staff count has not been finalized, Cindrich suggested that it could between three to five. The local police headcount prior to the county consolidation exceeded 20 uniformed staffers.
