Overflow Ossining Crowd Discusses State Aid Shortfall

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Ossining School officials, parents and residents gathered to discuss a state funding shortfall that leaves the school as one of the eight-least funded school districts in the state on Thursday, Nov. 7, according to LoHud.com.

Ossining Schools passed a resolution to petition lawmakers to unfreeze the state foundation aid to help close a funding gap in the district.

School officials at the meeting asked parents and other community members to petition state legislators to unfreeze the state foundation aid. Foundation aid has been frozen since 2008 and school officials claim it has left the district underfunded to the tune of $36 million, LoHud.com reported.

The problem is the result of a growing school district. Ossining has 660 more students than it did in 2008 and a higher poverty rate to go along with it, LoHud.com said.

A resolution was passed by the school board on Wednesday night to call on lawmakers via Twitter, letter writing and a proposed trip to Albany in an effort to close the funding gap, according to LoHud.com.
