Parking Innovations Coming To Bronxville Meters, Lots

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – After undertaking a yearlong review of parking in the village, Bronxville officials are introducing smarter, easier parking this month through a series of initiatives that will benefit local businesses.

The first step in the Bronxville parking initiative is to team with Pango to make parking smarter.

In an effort to encourage more space turnover to increase local retail business, the village is going to “make meters more understandable, customer friendly and technologically advanced (while) adding a level of uniformity and consistency to the entire parking matrix,” according to Mayor Mary Marvin.

This month, the village is teaming with Pango, a company that created a system that allows motorists to park and pay using their cell phones. Pango eliminates the need for parking machines, the need to rifle through vehicles for loose change, and can be customized and adjusted to fit one’s need.

Marvin said that they studied several options as they get set to update parking in the village, including a credit card swipe system that would have required the reconfiguration of more than 1,000 meters.

“After a thorough analysis of the competing providers, we chose Pango because of their competitive pricing, user friendly application, and the fact that they invented many of the app’s innovations and hold their patents,” she stated. “Pango allows us to take advantage of state-of-the-art technology with minimal capital outlay.”

Additionally, on-street meter enforcement will now continue until 9 p.m., an hour later, because “after intensive observation, (officials) noticed that cars in front of the theater, restaurants and businesses were utilizing the free evening parking, but not frequenting village establishments.” The anticipated revenue generated as a result of this measure is expected to result in a lowering of village taxes by nearly 1 percent.

“We listened to our merchants, doctors and restaurateurs, whose clientele often require longer increments of time than are currently available,” Marvin noted. “As a result, we have increased the number of spaces that allow stays of three and four hours in the Cedar Street and Garden Avenue parking lots.”
