In March, the City Council unanimously approved a $200,000 expenditure that allowed them to hire additional contracting crews to assist the DPW in patching up roads. Then in May, the city received a $115,000 grant as part of the New York State Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement (CHIPS).
Under CHIPS, the funds “may only be used for sectional pavement placement, mill and pave work.” Since road repair work began, several thousand potholes have been filled, with nearly 30,000-square-feet of city roads being repaired.
City officials have warned that residents should exercise caution because a greater number of New Rochelle streets are being resurfaced than typical this summer, with crews starting work as early as 7 a.m. on some mornings. A list of estimated streets and construction dates can be found on the city website.
Robert Sinclair Jr., the manager of media relations for AAA New York noted that this winter was unusually rough on roads throughout the state.
“An unprecedented combination of weather, roads already in poor condition and the inordinate number of trucks in our region have led to an epic number of potholes,” he said. “The situation is a stark reminder of the need to ensure that the federal highway trust fund is adequately financed so that our crumbling infrastructure can be rebuilt.”
