Hurricane Sandy brought devastating winds to the area, downing trees and power lines throughout Rye. During the storm, the tidal surge was well above normal at 6 to 11 feet. About 90 percent of the city’s 6,070 Con Edison customers were without power in the first few days after the storm. It took nearly two weeks for full power to be restored.
Pierce Crowley, a 15-year-old Rye boy, set off a social media frenzy when he went missing in White Plains on May 25. He was found safe nearly six days later by two NYPD officers and returned home to his family.
Three Rye High School Teens Accused of Hazing
Three Rye teens – Max Meyerson, 16, Sean Pinson, 17 and Tristan Scragg, 17 – were accused of forcing several incoming freshmen into a car in front of the Rye Free Reading Room on June 1 and driving to the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye, where they paddled two of the younger students with a large piece of wood. When Rye City Court met Oct. 16, the felony assault charges were scaled down to misdemeanors and the records of the case were immediately sealed.
Woman Fights Off Attacker At The Osborn In Rye
A 72-year-old woman residing at The Osborn retirement community on Theall Road in Rye was attacked by an early morning intruder wielding a knife in late August. Police have yet to make an arrest in the incident.
Increased Bridge Strikes On Westchester Parkways
Truck drivers, many using GPS devices designed for passenger vehicles, drove tractor-trailers onto county parkways, striking overpasses. Despite increased signage, there were 62 bridge collisions in 2012. Rye Brook overpasses on the Hutchinson River Parkway were no exception.
In August, a Rye Brook woman was sexually assaulted in her home in front of her son by the jealous wife of a contractor employed by the woman, police said. The jealous wife was arrested and is due in court on Jan. 15.
Westchester County Budget Controversy
The December vote on the 2013 Westchester budget turned controversial when a “bi-partisan coalition” of the seven Republican legislators and two defecting Democrats voted and passed their own version of the budget after the chairman had tried to adjourn a special meeting of the Board of Legislators. County Executive Robert Astorino signed the coalition’s budget later that day. Democrats contend it was not legally passed, but Republicans say it is law.
Rye Building Super Guilty Of Bestiality
A former Rye building superintendent was accused of breaking into an apartment at Rye Colony Cooperative Apartments and engaging in sexual acts with a Labrador retriever puppy in February. The man pleaded guilty in October and is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 13.
The Capitol Theatre Reopens In Port Chester
In September, The Capitol Theatre made a comeback bringing big names and much needed revitalization to the village. More than 40 shows have been presented at the venue, including The Roots, Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir, Blondie, Counting Crows, Ben Folds Five, Regina Spektor, Buddy Guy, Dirty Projectors, Fiona Apple and most recently the 40-year reunion of The Rascals.
AirTran Departs County Airport, Geese Strike JetBlue
The Westchester County Airport was no stranger to headlines in 2012 as geese struck a JetBlue plane in April, AirTran Airways departed in August and Hurricane Sandy halted airport activity in October.
