Katz was found dead Nov. 11 while walking from his home to the Goldens Bridge train station when he collapsed on Route 100 at 6:45 a.m.
Katz worked in Manhattan as a pension actuary at Savasta and Co. The family declined an autopsy, citing religious reasons and believes he died of an undetermined medical condition.
The family has set up the Frank Katz Memorial Fund at Chase Bank at the Somers Town Center as a result of the family facing significant financial hardship with Katz's death, including possible eviction.
"We don't want to have to ask for help," Jonathan Katz, the oldest of his 12 children said. "Every little bit helps."
The family has raised about $1,655 as of Nov. 19.
"He was a smart and loving man," said Katz, about his father. "He loved his kids and was a loving husband to my mom, Carol."
Before Somers, the family lived in Newtown, Conn. Katz, who worked in pensions for 33 years, also taught high school math. He grew up in Bayside. Jonathan said he always wanted a big family and it has helped with the grieving process.
"My parents loved having lots of kids," Katz said. "I love being one of 12. We can all support each other emotionally."
The Katz's have been involved with the community, especially with education. Jonathan said his father loved to read and do crossword puzzles and watch the Mets.
"He was just such a great man," Katz said. "When he passed away, they had his name, but that's it. I want the community to know his story."
Despite being new to the community, Katz appreciates the love of the people in Somers.
"There has been a lot of outpouring of support," Katz said.
