Candida auris, a harmful form of yeast, is an emerging fungus that presents a serious global health threat.

New York health officials on Tuesday revealed new details about the 44 cases in New York — all in NYC aside from one in Rochester, The New York Times said. Seventeen of those patients died, but they all had other illnesses, according to NYT.

Newborns and elderly hospital patients are the most vulnerable, according to The New York Times.

C. auris is difficult to identify with standard laboratory methods and can be misidentified in labs without specific technology, the CDC said.
