EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester Daily Voice will lead into the new year by counting down, in no particular order, the top 10 stories from 2012.
After years of planning, work was officially started in the summer on the $39.4 million project to replace the deteriorated Crane Road Bridge on the Bronx River Parkway.
For more than five years, the project was refined and was at the center of public meetings and debates. Work will be done in four phases over a 34-month period, causing lanes to be closed on the parkway at times.
Construction is estimated to be finished by spring 2015.
When completed, the new bridge will feature wider lanes and shoulders, including a northbound deceleration lane to Crane Road. Sidewalks will be added, and the southbound Metro-North platform will be completely reconstructed. A portion of the Scarsdale Merchant Parking Lot has been partitioned as a staging area for equipment.
About 30,000 motorists use the bridge each day, and the construction will create nearly 400 jobs for local workers.
The Pipeline Road entrance ramp to the parkway was closed in July and will not reopen until the project is completed. During the second phase, which begins in May, exits to Crane Road also be closed, as well as a northbound lane. Additionally, one southbound lane will be closed from November 2013 until the completion of the construction.
After having to suffer through delays because of construction on the Popham Road Bridge, Scarsdale residents were hesitant about being thrust into another extensive project. They were able to air their concerns at a meeting in July to the village Board of Trustees and others involved in the Crane Road Bridge reconstruction.
“The bridge is almost a century old and must be replaced now to ensure the safety of the motorists that use it each day,” Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said in June. “We will do our best to minimize the inconvenience the construction will cause.”
