Tuckahoe Dog Groomer Turns Dentist For Pet Dental Health Month

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Groom Spot, the dog salon that recently opened in Tuckahoe, is set to celebrate National Pet Dental Health Month by educating and emphasizing something that has become a fixture in everyone’s daily routine: teeth brushing.

While pet owners are typically conscious of having their beloved dogs properly vaccinated and groomed, oral care is often overlooked when it comes to an animal’s healthcare. Groom Spot will celebrate the month with several packages that will focus on dental health.

Co-owner Larry Van Nostrand – who, along with his girlfriend Julie Zwisdak are responsible for all grooming – said that the pair brushes Groom Spot’s “mascot” rescue dog Maeby once a week.

“It’s important to get your dog in a routine where it’s comfortable with teeth brushing from an early age,” he said. “Even though your puppy may have baby teeth, you want to introduce them to the brush, so that over time they will view it as a special treat.”

Douglas Aspros, the president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), noted that many owners are ill aware of the importance of oral health care for their pets.

“Dental health problems are extremely common, and many are very painful and can lead to serious systemic conditions,” he said. “I remind pet owners that an untreated dental infection can spread and suddenly become life threatening.”

According to the AMVA, oral health care is essential to an animal’s well being, and what is seemingly bad breath could represent a serious health risk. Throughout February, Groom Spot will include packages that include teeth brushing and breath freshening. There will also be toothbrushes and rinses for sale.

“Our teeth brushing package is designed to remove plaque and tartar. Our service should supplement a home routine,” Zwisdak said. “We want [the dogs] not only looking their best, but feeling their best.”
