EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Last July, VFW Post 2285 Commander Bob Foster appealed to the Tuckahoe Board of Trustees to celebrate village veterans and their families by naming a village landmark in their honor.

At the time, Foster’s proposals including naming a local bridge or the Metro North station after the American Gold Star Mothers, an organization of women that lost a child in service to the country. More than a year later, his wish has been granted.

On Sunday, the bridge on Main Street in Tuckahoe crossing the railroad tracks officially will be named the Gold Star Mothers Memorial Bridge by village officials.

During war times, the Tuckahoe station was the only railroad available in the area, Foster said. He added that wives walked with their husbands across the bridge to the train, many for the last time.

Foster said the bridge would be dedicated to the mothers whose children didn't come home from war. The dedication will kick off at 11 a.m. Sunday at the bridge. Following the ceremony, there will be a luncheon at the VFW Post in Eastchester on White Plains Road.

“Lots of soldiers got on that train and never came back to Tuckahoe again,” Foster said. “It’s a simple way for us to say thank you for what they did and gave us. We cannot do enough for these brave men and women.”

Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond could not be reached for immediate comment.
