Westchester Cops Get Tip on Dead Cats and Dogs Dumped on Parkway

HARRISON, N.Y. – The owner of one of the dead cats found on the side of the Hutchinson River Parkway in Harrison on April 5 told Westchester County Police that her pet died of natural causes.

According to published reports, the Westchester County Police Department posted a picture of a white cat that was found in a shoebox in one of the garbage bags left on the Hutch near Westchester Avenue nine days ago. In total, approximately 35 dead animals, including cats, dogs and a lizard were found.

Authorities said that the woman, whose name was not released, gave them a call after recognizing her pet in the picture posted by the county police. The woman said that she gave the cat to a service, which police have not yet named, to dispose of her deceased cat’s body. County police had previously stated that they did not believe that the animals were euthanized. In published reports, Westchester SPCA Chief Ernie Lungaro said that the animals were probably on their way to be cremated or “properly disposed of” but along the way they were just left on the side of the road.

According to Westchester County Police Spokesperson Kieran O’Leary, the department has not released additional information to the public just yet but it will once what happened is established.

Anyone with information is being urged to call the Westchester County Police Department at 1-800-898-8477 or the SPCA law enforcement hotline at 914-941-7797.
