Westchester Medical Center Receives Highest Level Of Trauma Verification

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.Y. – Westchester Medical Center (WMC) and its Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, has become only the second hospital in New York State to receive the highest level trauma verification (Level I) for both children and adults from the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

Westchester Medical Center has received Level 1 trauma verification, the highest level verification.

“For decades, WMC has made a significant commitment to the residents of the Hudson Valley region to provide the highest level emergency and trauma care for children and adults—in our operating rooms and post-operative, trauma, pediatric and other intensive care units, our Burn Center and our dedicated rehabilitation center,” said Michael D. Israel, president and CEO of Westchester Medical Center.

“One of the distinguishing criteria for Level one status as regional leaders is an additional commitment to research, outreach and injury prevention. Our team is highly committed and specially trained for every clinical eventuality, as well as uniquely focused on trauma research and its translation into developing ways to reduce trauma injuries in our region,” continued Israel.

Israel said the recent ACS verification is especially important because New York now uses the ACS verification program to designate trauma centers in the state. The new review process is required of all centers interested in providing trauma services regardless of their prior status.

“Our Level one status ensures that patients have immediate access to the most modern and sophisticated resuscitation and life-support technology,” said John Savino, M.D., senior vice president, medical operations and director of surgery.

“Dedicated trauma operating rooms, an imaging center and an on-site blood bank make our Trauma Center a self- contained resource with immediate access to the latest diagnostic technologies and treatment modalities, which can often mean the difference between life and death,” added Savino.

In New York State, trauma centers are categorized as Regional Trauma Centers (the highest level) or Area Trauma Centers. As a Regional, Level I Trauma Center, WMC and its children’s hospital are verified to provide care to the area’s most critically ill and injured patients.

To date, WMC is one of only two hospitals in the entire state and the only hospital in southern New York – including New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley – to receive the ACS verification for both adult and pediatric Level I Trauma.
