EASTCHESTER, N.Y. Service has been restored to all lanes at White Plains Road and Hilldale Place in Eastchester, more than four months after a water main break forced a closure.
The 30-inch water main which services Mamaroneck and Larchmont burst on Jan. 13, sending a flood of water 6 inches deep down Hilldale Place and White Plains Road. One of the two southbound lanes had been closed ever since, creating a bottleneck of traffic for months while Westchester Joint Water Works personnel collaborated with Con Edison to replace the main.
Access has been restored for both vehicles and foot traffic, Rocco Latella, general foreman for the Eastchester Highway Department, said Monday afternoon.
"That project is moving right along. We redid the sidewalks already, so it's safe for pedestrians, and the other lane is now open, so it's safe for vehicles," he said. "Both southbound lanes are open as of (Monday)."
The construction has frustrated travelers, forcing traffic on the heavily used road into one lane outside the busy Vernon Hills shopping center. The construction made Hilldale Place inaccessible from White Plains Road.
Westchester Joint Water Works officials replaced the water main in the beginning of April, and water flow through the new main was restored late April 5. Latella said Hilldale Place will remain temporarily unavailable from White Plains Road until crews remove their equipment from the area.
