Deputy Village Manager Stephen Pappalardo said he expects all five lanes of the bridge to be open in the next three to four weeks, once traffic poles and signals are installed and signal phasing is completed.
Workers still need to finish the handrail on the train platform extension, install pedestrian signals, traffic poles, streetlights and traffic signage. The landscape is going to be balanced and the remaining sections of concrete form liner will be stained.
The construction contract expires March 15, so all punch list items must be completed by then. The recent cold spell won’t cause any more delays, and only extreme weather could stand in the way of getting those things done, Pappalardo said.
“Other than landscaping and form liner staining, the balance of the work is not contingent on any minimum temperature,” he said. “If it snows heavily, this will slow the work down.”
Over the past three months, workers have been on phase three of the project: completing the center portion of the bridge after replacing the north and south sides.
Crews completed the superstructure work with the forming and pouring of steel reinforced concrete abutments on the west and east sides of the railroad tracks. The steel was then placed over the center portion between the abutments, and the concrete center bridge deck, sidewalks and median were poured. The road was resurfaced and pavement markings for the five lanes were finished.
Pappalardo expressed his appreciation to residents for their patience, and said the project will ultimately be to the benefit of the whole village.
“I want to thank the residents and commuters for their patience during this three-year project,” he said. “We look forward to utilizing the new bridge, enjoying the improved aesthetics and improved pedestrian and vehicular traffic conditions.”
