At a special meeting over the weekend, the commissioners unanimously approved the project, which will involve replacing the ramp and damaged floor, replacing antiquated plumbing in the near century old building and the installation of an epoxy coating on the surface of the new floor.
The original plan involved replacing just the ramp and half of the floor, but when the portion of the floor to be replaced was ripped up by contractors, they found that waste and water lines were in poor condition, leading to the more comprehensive project.
Fire Commissioner Peter Incledon said that once contractors tore up the first half, it was “obvious” they needed to replace the other half of the floor as well.
“Once we took up the eastern half of the floor, it became obvious the piping and drainage lines are completely destroyed to the point that they’re rusted both inside and outside and there could be a failure in the pipes,” he said. “If that were to happen, water could leak underneath and create issues where that floor eroded. If we had trouble with the water line, the cost of that repair could be prohibitive.”
