ISO is a third-party independent agency that evaluates fire departments in the U.S. and ranks the results on a scale from one to ten, with one being the highest. According to the ISO, most U.S. insurers report that information from the ISO’s Public Protection Classification Program influences decisions such as what business to cover, what coverage’s to offer, and what prices to charge for personal or commercial property insurance.

The Fire Department’s rating, which goes into effect this year, is an improvement from the department’s previous rating of Class 3. The class 2 distinction is given to about 750 fire departments out of a total 49,000.

To determine the ranking, ISO examines the fire department, its communication and dispatch, and the water system. ISO also credits fire prevention code and evaluation, public fire safety education and fire investigation programs.

Since the Eastchester Fire Department covers multiple overlapping zip codes, and officials recommend that residents check with their insurance company to see if they recognize the ISO PPC system and if so, whether the proper PPC code 2 is being applied to their premiums.
