EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Members of the Eastchester Police Department will have a new set of toys to play with, after a donation led to the installation of in-car video cameras for the entire fleet.

The Lanza Family Foundation donated $83,000 to the department for the cameras, which was manufactured by L-3 Communications Mobile Video Inc. The system will activate when a car’s lights and sirens are turned on.

Eastchester Police Chief Timothy Bonci said the system is replacing an antiquated version. The video will increase officer safety and allow sergeants to review traffic stops.

In-car video cameras are nothing new to departments in Westchester County, but Eastchester now features one of the newest system. Video is instantly uploaded wirelessly from each car to the Mill Road station. Under the old system, hard drives had to physically be removed and backed up from department vehicles.

The state-of-the-art digital system will also be used during court cases, allowing for reviews of all stops if there is a complaint. It will also include a timestamp that will be used to capture violations and accidents.

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” said Fred Salanitro, a member of the town board. “A video is probably worth a lot more than a thousand words.”
