Andre Coverdale, who has no known address, was charged with one count of murder in the second degree, a Class A felony, one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony, in the death of 50-year-old Dawne McCray, Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty announced.

Coverdale walked up to a security booth at 2 Schroeder Street in Yonkers and told the security officer that “he had just killed his mother" and asked the guard to call the police at about 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 16, McCarty said.

When Yonkers Police arrived on the scene, Coverdale was still waiting at the guard booth. The security guard identified the Coverdale as the person claiming to have killed his mother, McCarty said.

When police officers entered the apartment, they found McCray stabbed to death in her bed and located the apparent murder weapon, a knife, on a window sill in the living room, McCarty said.

The victim died from multiple stab wounds of the face and neck involving a carotid artery and jugular veins resulting in massive bleeding, McCarty said.

Coverdale was remanded and his next court date is May 11.

Coverdale faces a sentence of 15 years to life.

Deputy District Attorney Timothy Ward of the Superior Court Trial Division is prosecuting the case.
