At approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, March 25, state police attempted to stop Anthony Haripersaud from the state of Maryland on I-287 for a traffic violation near Rye, officials said. Instead, Haripersaud, who was driving with a female passenger, sped away, ignoring police warnings and took off onto I-95, traveling southbound.

Local and state police proceeded to pursue Haripersaud’s Mercedes, who reportedly drove through multiple traffic lights and stop signs before the chase came to a crashing halt in the Bronx, with one pursuing officer rear-ending him, police confirmed. In an attempt to escape, he then attempted to cut off a second pursuing police car, striking the passenger’s door before having to be forcibly removed from his vehicle by arresting officers.

Haripersaud was ultimately arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree criminal mischief, all felonies. The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has reportedly issued a detainer for Haripersaud, which could lead to his deportation. He currently remains remanded to the Westchester County Jail. Haripersaud is due back in Rye City Court next month.
