Donna Lee was arrested and charged with a felony count of third-degree grand larceny, after an internal investigation was launched last month after a “discrepancy” was discovered by the Finance Department when a cash deposit wasn’t made.
Lee, 48, was held overnight at the New Rochelle Police Department and arraigned Tuesday on the charges. She now faces criminal prosecution from the Westchester County District Attorney’s office.
The New Rochelle Tax Department that Lee stole from collects taxes from city residents, Westchester County, the New Rochelle School District and the local public libraries.
City Manager Chuck Strome said that they are looking to “evaluate our internal control system in the Tax Department to determine if improvements can be implemented. Police Captain Joseph Schaller could not immediately be reached for comment regarding the investigation.
“Earlier this month, the Finance Department reported $9,500 missing from the Tax Office and turned the matter over to the New Rochelle Police Department,” Strome stated. “After a thorough investigation an arrest has been made. The employee, Donna Lee, has been terminated and the matter will be turned over to the District Attorney’s office for further criminal prosecution.”
