HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- An Elmsford police officer is in critical but stable condition after being struck by a car Sunday night.

Kenneth Gumbs, 45, of Hawthorne was the injured off-duty officer, according to Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva.

Police said they continue to investigate the incident in which Gumbs was struck by a car while crossing Bradhurst Avenue near Chateau Lane about 8:20 p.m.

Oliva said Gumbs was undergoing surgery at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla on Monday, where he was listed in "critical but stable condition."

Gumbs suffered internal injuries and head injuries, police said.

Oliva said the driver, who is not expected to be charged, said he did not see Gumbs crossing the road as he drove north on Bradhurst Avenue (Route 100) in Hawthorne.

The Westchester County police accident reconstruction team is assisting the investigation.

Bradhurst Avenue was closed for several hours as police investigated. The state Department of Transportation reported the road closing about 10 p.m. Sunday and reopened at 3:15 a.m. Monday

Oliva said the driver of the car stopped at the scene, called 911 and was cooperative. An investigation is continuing.
