Police Investigating Fatal Midday Stabbing In Southern Westchester

YONKERS, N.Y. - The Yonkers Police Department is seeking information regarding a fatal Tuesday afternoon stabbing that happened on city streets.

According to police, shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, officers in the 3rd Precinct in Yonkers were on patrol when they were flagged down by a group of individuals in the vicinity of Elm and Walnut Street.

Upon further investigation, officers found a 24-year-old male victim lying on the sidewalk near a bodega at 198 Elm St. with a stab wound to his abdomen. Responding officers subsequently contacted the Communications Division for medical assistance, prompting a response from the Yonkers Police Department’s Emergency Service Unit and Empress Ambulance.

Life saving measures were immediately started for the victim and he was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment. Less than an hour after he was found on the sidewalk, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The victim has been identified as Yonkers resident James Puryear. Detectives are currently investigating the stabbing and reviewing nearby surveillance video. No suspects have been charged and no motive has been released by police for the stabbing.
