The Eastchester Police Department has been setting up checkpoints around town to ensure proper safety restraint compliance by all drivers and passengers since May 20.

“Click It or Ticket” is a statewide, zero tolerance enforcement campaign. It is designed to increase safety restraint use in the state and to prevent highway fatalities and injuries that are caused when seatbelts are improperly utilized.

According to the police, studies of recent crash records indicate that seatbelt use at night in the state is lower than it is during the daytime, which led to the department setting up most checkpoints later in the evening during these emphasis patrols.

During last year’s campaign, officers in Eastchester issued 80 tickets, 46 of which were for seatbelt violations, down from the year before. In Tuckahoe, officers found 49 seat belt violations, down from 60 in 2011.

Despite the high visibility of the program, Tuckahoe Police Lt. Ray Stabile said that drivers continue to be caught without their seatbelts each year.

“This enforcement detail has been conducted for a long time,” he said. “There’s no excuse not to wear a seat belt. We’re glad that people seem to be getting the message.”
