Suspected Triggerman In Shooting Of Yonkers Officer Charged In Hospital

The suspected triggerman in the shooting of a Yonkers female police officer was charged Thursday in his hospital bed as he recovers from being by return fire in a shootout with police earlier this week.

New Rochelle resident Frank Valencia, 18, was arraigned at Westchester Medical Center after he allegedly shot officer Kayla Maher in the jaw on Monday night during a shootout in the Park Hill section of Yonkers.

He was charged with attempted murder in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon. 

The teen had been released on probation for a gun charge days before the shooting.

The other suspect in the shooting, 22-year-old Jerry Reyes, also of New Rochelle, been charged with criminal possession of a weapon. 

"Valencia stands accused of perpetrating one of the most heinous of violent acts, the attempted murder of one of our police officers; his alleged actions were an assault on Officer Maher, the Yonkers Police Department, and the community we serve," Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said. "Due to the bravery and courage of our police officers, Valencia and Reyes were taken into custody and have been delivered into the Criminal Justice System where they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office is managing the prosecution of this case.
