Tuckahoe Police Offer Tips To Prevent Burglaries

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – As the summer heat rises, so to do the number of burglaries in Eastchester and Tuckahoe homes. Because many families are away on vacation, and children are at camp while parents work, burglars find empty homes at their disposal.

To help residents ensure that their homes are safe, the Tuckahoe police are providing several simple tips for people going on vacation.

All homes should have a dead bolt installed on the front door, which should be locked at all times to prevent easy access. Police warn that you cannot rely on the door chain on apartment doors, which can be easily forced open. Instead, door viewers are more useful, allowing residents to see who is on the opposite side.

The police remind simply that all windows and doors should remained locked, a common mistake by homeowners and vehicle owners. Those in apartments should avoid buzzing in anyone they don’t know.

Despite courtesy, doors should not be held open for strangers entering or leaving buildings. Finally, if one is out of town for a long time, timers should be used on lights, radios and televisions to give the appearance that someone is home.
