TUCKAHOE, N.Y. ‒ An 82-year-old man from New York City was trying to open a car door in Tuckahoe with an unknown object Thursday evening when he was spotted by police officers.

The man appeared to be trying to forcefully enter the vehicle on Fairview Avenue  when he was taken into custody, Lt. Ray Stabile said.

After bringing him to headquarters, police discovered that he was an Alzheimer’s patient who had been reported missing four days earlier.

The man thought the car was his, Stabile said. He was released to his family, who were grateful for the police department’s efforts.

Also on the Tuckahoe police blotter from Oct. 11 through Oct. 17:

• Matthew Bachman, 41, of Bronxville was arrested Saturday after Tuckahoe police received a complaint of a man who appeared to be smoking marijuana in his car. Officers found Bachman smoking a pipe in his car on Cottage Place. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor.

• John Seemer of Yonkers was arrested Monday on a Tuckahoe warrant from 2010 charging him with with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor. Seemer, 23, was stopped for a routine traffic matter in Yonkers and turned over to Tuckahoe police.

• A woman attempted to cash a fraudulent check Friday at a Chase bank in Crestwood. A teller refused to cash the check and called police to report the woman. Police checked the area but did not find a woman matching the suspect's description.

According to Stabile, fraud has been on the rise in the last two years.

“It’s a very easy crime to commit,” he said. “They start in North Plains and make their way south hitting all of the banks.”
