The Yonkers Police Department was alerted by the pilots at approximately 8 p.m. on Thursday night to a group of three men who were in the process of dumping furniture illegally in the parking lot next to Cook Field. The pilots said that the occupants had dumped the items and were attempting to leave the lot surreptitiously with the headlights turned off.

Police arrived at the scene and intercepted the van before it could get away. The incident led to the arrests of Yonkers residents Abdallah Alrabadi, 35, Luis Montes, 21, and Orlando, Fla. resident Julio Lugo, 25. Police said that the men were attempting to illegally dump a couch and chair in the parking lot. Further investigation determined that the van was not registered and had improper license plates.

All three men were charged with a city ordinance violation for dumping, a misdemeanor, as well as several vehicle and traffic violations. The van was also impounded.

“The quality of life of our residents is one of our top priorities so when individuals are caught dumping on Yonkers, it is not tolerated,” Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. “We have increased the penalties and fines so to discourage this illegal and disrespectful action. We plan on selling the vehicle used in this case to pay for the mess. Let this be a lesson – don’t dump on Yonkers.”

Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner added that “illegal dumping is a crime, and diminishes the quality of life in our City. The Yonkers Police Department working together with our partners in law enforcement will deliver perpetrators who engage in this illegal activity into the Criminal Justice System where they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including the seizure of their vehicle.”
