Chappaqua's Clinton Blames Westchester Native Comey For Losing Race

Chappaqua resident Hillary Clinton is blaming her loss in the presidential election on FBI Director James Comey, a native of Westchester, who in the last days of the campaign said he had revived an inquiry into her use of a private email server, according to multiple media reports.

Clinton, who conceded Wednesday to Republican Donald Trump, who owns an estate in Bedford, made the statements about Comey during a call to donors on Saturday.

The controversy over Clinton's use a private email server at her home while she was secretary of state re-erupted after Comey's announcement that he had sent a letter to Congress about the issue. He sent a second letter two days before Election Day clearing her.

But Clinton said the damage was done, and the campaign could not recover its momentum, according to The New York Times Times. Clinton said the reminder of the email issue had a negative impact with many voters, the Times said.

Controversy also swirled for days around Comey, who ultimately said that Clinton should not face any charges over her handling of classified information, which is what he had also announced over the summer.

President Barack Obama appointed Comey, a Republican, to be FBI director in 2013.

Comey is a Yonkers native who lived in the city until his teenage years before his family moved to Allendale, N.J., where he graduated high school.

He is also the grandson of William Comey, a longtime Yonkers police officer who became the department's commissioner.

Comey, a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York who was chosen by President Barack Obama to lead the FBI in 2013. It's a 10-year appointment.

Comey, now a resident of Westport, Conn., had earlier served as deputy attorney general from December 2003 through August 2005 under President George W. Bush.

He worked as general counsel at Lockheed Martin Corp from 2005 to 2010. In 2010, Comey became general counsel of the Westport-based Bridgewater Associates, the largest hedge fund in the world. In 2013, he left Bridgewater to become senior research scholar and Hertog Fellow on National Security at Columbia University Law School in New York before his appointment to the FBI.

In addition to owning the Seven Springs estate in Bedford, Trump also owns Trump National Golf Club Hudson Valley in Stormville and Trump National Westchester in Briarcliff Manor. The Trump name also adorns Trump Tower At City Center in White Plains, Trump Plaza in New Rochelle, Trump Park Residences in Yorktown and the Donald J. Trump State Park on the Westchester/Putnam border.
