Cuomo: Displaced Westchester Residents Can Vote Elsewhere

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. — Westchester residents who went to stay with relatives or friends in other parts of the state  after Hurricane Sandy, can vote where they are, the governor has ordered.

An executive order signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday allows registered voters in federally declared disaster areas to vote in any polling place in New York State.

Residents who remained in their home district after the storm, can vote at their regular polling place.

Any voter registered in a federally declared disaster county after Hurricane Sandy, which incudes Westchester, can vote on an affidavit ballot at any polling site in New York State, regardless of where they are registered, under an executive order issued Monday evening by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

"Hurricane Sandy has already disrupted the lives of countless New Yorkers, but we will not let it disrupt anyone seeking to exercise the most fundamental of Democratic rights: the right to vote, " Cuomo said in a news release Monday night.

First responders and emergency workers involved in the Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts are included in the executive order if they reside in federally declared disaster counties.

The executive order applies to registered voters from Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as New York City. Voters may receive and complete an affidavit ballot at any polling place in New York State.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 6 to 9 a.m.
