Petition Aims To Put Breaks On North Castle Dog Park

ARMONK, N.Y. – As the North Castle Town Board prepares for its April 17 dog park discussion work session, a group of North Castle residents has formed a petition opposing such a project.

Whether the newly cleared space at Wampus Brook Park becomes a dog park remains to be seen.

The petition, dubbed “Put The Breaks On The Dog Park!” is being circulated through the email of putthebreaksonthedogpark@gmail.com. It goes into depth about concerns over the Town Board's process for turning the recently cleared section of Wampus Brook Park into a dog park.

“Many residents and business owners of North Castle are concerned about the negative impact that a Wampus Brook dog park will have on our Wampus neighbors, the character of our historic downtown, and our Town budget,” the petition says. “We aren’t going to stand idly by and let our local elected officials fast track this dog park with secret budgets, mystery benefactors and without the input or involvement of the community that will be affected by the project.”

The question of whether to turn Wampus Brook Park into a town dog park has become a polarizing topic in North Castle.

North Castle Councilwoman Diane DiDonato-Roth, who is spearheading the dog park, said she understands the public concerns but remains confident it will be a welcome addition to the town.

“I don’t find the location dangerous at all. That’s why there will be fences,” she previously told The Armonk Daily Voice. “In terms of the public safety, I think it’s great. It’s not out in the middle of the woods. You can go to this park alone and not feel isolated or insecure.”

However, the petition accuses DiDonato-Roth of choosing “not to follow American Kennel Club’s recommended steps to create a dog park and instead has chosen a location in haste.”

More information regarding the next steps in the Wampus Brook Park dog park will come at the April 17 work session, slated to be held in the Town Annex meeting room at 17 Bedford Road at 4 p.m.

Other topics of discussion will include “Welcome to North Castle” signs and the Maple Avenue Parking District.
