Tuckahoe, Bronxville Prepare For Village Elections

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – A pair of Tuckahoe Democrats are threatening to crash the traditionally Republican-heavy village board, as Eastchester gears up for village elections season.

Incumbent Trustee Steven Quigley and Democratic Chairman Chris DiGiorgio were tabbed by the party to square off against Republican nominees Steven Alfasi and Melba Caliano, both attorneys. Whoever wins election will serve a two-year term.

The four will battle for two trustee positions, after Janette Hayes’ term ended. The election victors will join Mayor Steve Ecklond, Deputy Mayor Tom Giordano and Trustee Greg Luisi, all Republicans, on the board.

The four will have a chance to earn public favor next week, when the Southern Westchester League of Women Voters presents a debate for the candidates. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 9 in the auditorium at Tuckahoe Village Hall, all four candidates will debate the issues that matter most to the village.

Topics that are expected to be addressed will include ways to limit taxes, the village budget, improving economic development in the business district and the proposed plastic bag ban that would have forbade retail stores in the village to use more environmentally friendly paper.

Although the Republicans are each running for a trustee position for the first time, they have served on village committees for years. Caliano has been a member of the village Planning Board for a decade and Alfasi is serving his first time on the Tuckahoe Zoning Board of Appeals.

Both have played a role in the recent uptick in development in the village, including the opening of Broken Bow Brewery and the ice rink that is currently under construction on Marbledale Road.

Quigley has been the lone Democratic mainstay on the board for most of his five-year tenure. He was responsible for the plastic bag ban bill – which fell 4-1 – and has been an advocate for affordable housing. He’s a member of the Tuckahoe Assessment Review Board and co-founded the Tuckahoe Assessment Review Board.

DiGiorgio, the former chair of the Eastchester Democratic Committee, has served as the Tuckahoe Democratic Party chairman for three years. He works as an optometrist in New Rochelle, and also has a history of being environmentally conscious. He founded SAFE: Spirit and Faith for Everyone, which creates safe places for the LGBT community.

In Bronxville, Republican Trustees Anne Poorman, who has been on the board for nine years, and Guy Longobardo, who is completing his first term, will run unopposed, serving two-year terms.

Village elections will be held on Tuesday, March 18.
